Obituary

William "Bill" Schureck, 88, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022.

Bill developed his strong work ethic from his youth growing up on a farm.  He started milking cows at 5 years of age.  He said he loved cows and they loved him.

He always spoke fondly of his time spent on the farm.  He talked about how life on a farm develops teamwork within a family and creates a positive work ethic that carries on throughout the rest of one's life.

He carried that strong work ethic and discipline onto the sports field.  He was very proud to state that he "sacked" the legendary "Paul Hornung" during their high school football game.  He said "I knew Paul was quick, so I had to be that much faster".

He especially loved baseball.  He said he could "catch a baseball every which way it was pitched"

Bill then went onto become the 1 st person in his family to go to college.  He worked his way through college at Western University in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  He started a sub sandwich delivery service to the college dormitories with his friends and then expanded to start a small restaurant near campus.

One of his favorite things in life was his experience as teacher.  He went into teaching to help people.  Bill taught Math at Waggener High School and also at University of Louisville.  Bill liked to engage the students.  If the subject was Geometry, his students were encouraged to create 3-D models to better understand the equations.

Bill once taught himself how to write math problems upside down when he had a feisty student who would write everything upside down on purpose.  Bill then casually corrected the student's error on a problem and wrote the correction "upside down".  His student never wrote upside down again!

Bill loved all things Patriotic.  He proudly served in both the Army and then in Active Reserve.

Bill kept active throughout his life all the way to the finish line.  He wanted to build up is physical stamina, no matter how long it took.  He was always working to increase the distance on his daily walks.  Ever the math teacher, he insisted on measuring the distance on his walks so that he could calculate his total daily mileage.  He was very proud of walking an average of 8/10 of a mile at a time at 87 years of age.

Bill and his wife Rachel were married for 60 years.  He was always the first to say how blessed they both were to have 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren!

He lived by the motto "It's not what you take with you, it's what you leave behind!"

Visitation is 4pm – 7pm on Friday, August 19 th at Fern Creek Funeral Home.  With a Funeral Mass at St. Gabriel Church on Saturday, August 20 th at 10:30am.
