Obituary

Vernon Ray King passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 7, 2024.  He left this world the same way he lived in it, surrounded by the love of his family.  He was born in Kentucky and lived there most of his life there. Vernon served in the National Guard.  He was also a mason and a Kentucky Colonel.  He was a retired electrician, having retired from Dupont after 44 years of service.  He married the love of his life, Mary Alice Ingram, in 1960. Together, they raised three children, 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.  He was a life-long University of Kentucky fan.  Vernon also loved to do woodwork, making rocking horses and chairs for all of the children in the family.  He loved a good joke, a homecooked meal, a day of fishing, a good basketball game, and winning a game of cards.  He loved to build things and was well known for the phrase, "Looks good to me, nail it."  He was a man of few words, but great wisdom.

Vernon was known by a lot of titles throughout his life, but the most important ones were given by his family.  Husband, Father, Dad, Grandpa, Grumpaw, Rampaw, Umpaw, and Pa.  To his family, he truly was Superman.  He was their rock, their safe place, and their source of so many lessons. His passing leaves them heart broken, but also filled with comfort knowing that he is reunited with Mary Alice.  Their love endures in the hearts of their loved ones and all of the people they touched throughout their lifetimes.

Vernon was proceeded in death by his parents, Kelsey and Victoria King, and his beloved wife, Mary Alice King; and granddaughter, Kayla. He is survived by three children, Kim McClain (Bill Offutt), Kelly King, and Kyle King; 6 grandchildren, Nikki Carr (Sam Riley), Jake McClain (Megan), RJ Bishop (Ellen Koth), Mary Dawn Cross (Rob Cross III), Eric McDonough (Samantha), And Kelsey McDonough; 5 great-grandchildren, Emily Carr (Cory Charbeneau), Robbie Cross IV, Ryan Cross, Dominic McDonough, and Hudson McDonough; one sister, Juanita Ellegood (David), as well as countless other extended family members.

In accordance with his wishes, there will not be a formal service.  The family will be hosting a celebration of life 2-4pm on April 28, 2024 at Kyle King's home.  Contact a family member for his address.
