Obituary

Shirley Manuel passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 after a rapidly intense battle with colon cancer.  She was born September 12, 1934 in Louisville to Rahmer and Agnita Edwards Bobzien.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Bell and Rita Paris; and her first husband, Donald Z. Manuel.

She is survived by children, Donna Manuel, Carol Watts (Allen), Kathy Williams (Joe), John Manuel (Patty), Anthony Manuel, and Angela Manuel-Perez (Eduardo); nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Jeannie Faust; former spouse, Bill Brinly; and many nieces and nephews.

Her family thanks the staff at Morning Pointe of Louisville and Hosparus for their compassionate care.

Shirley was a graduate of Mercy Academy and later became a member of Mercy Association.  After years of staying home with her children, she returned to the workforce and retired from the United States Department of Justice where she worked as an investigation administrative assistant in the Department of Immigration and Naturalization.  She was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, serving in various roles over the years, including Eucharistic Minister.  Her love of genealogy led her to become a member of the German American Club, Louisville Genealogical Society and Irish Society of Kentuckiana.  Through her research she traced her ancestors to the first families of Kentucky and qualified to be a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society of Daughters of the Union, First Families of Kentucky and Colonial Dames of the 17 th Century.  Shirley enjoyed  sewing, often making clothes and dolls for her children and grandchildren and organic gardening, giving away the vegetables from her garden. She also enjoyed motorcycle riding with her son.

Funeral mass is 1pm Friday, May 27, 2022 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 7500 Tangelo Dr, Louisville, KY  40228 with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is 2-8pm Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY  40291.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made through contributions to St. Bernard Catholic Church, WHAS Crusade for Children c/o Highview Fire Department, or the Passionist Orphanage in Tonga, Kenya.
