Raymond Davis Wheeler, 87, slipped peacefully into the next life on April 1, 2023, surrounded by loving family in Indianapolis, Indiana. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Cheryl Darlene Harden, son, Bryan Scott Wheeler (58), and daughters Rachel Carol Gross (52), and Darlene Katheryn Roach (39) along with 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and many extended family members that will greatly miss him.
Ray was born June 29, 1935, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Raymond Wheeler and Margret Elizabeth Parsons, as well as older sister Wanda Lee Perry and younger sister Phyllis Jane Westerfield.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps (1952 to 1955), he was also an outstanding member of his church and community. He was known for his willingness to love, help, and serve others. He studied mechanical drafting and structural design and worked as a manufacturing engineer.
He was a notable member of the Scottish Rite Free Masons and a member of Buechel Masonic Lodge F&AM #896 where he served in many positions of leadership and responsibility including as Master Mason in 1965.
The family worshiped at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Ray served in many capacities there. He was ordained to the quorum of the 70 in the church in March 1978. As such, he was to be a special witness of the Lord Jesus and to help others to come unto Christ.
Funeral Services will be held at Fern Creek Funeral Home, on April 6, 2023, at 1 p.m. with a viewing at 11 a.m. A graveside service with Marine Corps honor guard will be held at Resthaven Cemetery at 2 p.m.
For anyone unavailable during the day, we will be having a small celebration of life after the burial at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: 1000 S Hurstbourne Pkwy, Louisville Ky from 3:00 to 5:30 pm. We will provide finger foods and beverages for anyone interested.
