Mumphord Holland
Kendall
May 7, 1945 – July 16, 2025
Mumphord Holland Kendall, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Born May 7, 1945, in Asheville, NC, "Holland" was the son of Mumphord "M.H." and Eva Robbins Kendall. Holland graduated from Mars Hill College and Clemson University, where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering.
Holland was a true pioneer in the field of Information Technology, dedicating over 50 years to the profession. He began his career at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, where he helped develop missile guidance systems. He later joined Wyle Laboratories, testing materials for NASA during the early days of America's space program. After moving his family to Louisville, Holland embarked on a 30-year career with GE Appliances, specializing in network systems. The first mainframe computer he worked on at GE now resides in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Even after retiring from GE, Holland worked in IT for another decade at Mercer, before retiring again to focus on his optometry ministry.
In 1999, inspired by a mission trip to Honduras, Holland founded Kendall Optometry Ministry. Capitalizing on his technical expertise, he developed a portable system to accurately determine eyeglass prescriptions for people in remote areas. He also developed an innovative process for collecting, measuring, and cataloging donated eyeglasses in the United States, ensuring mission teams around the world had access to a reliable supply chain of organized inventory. Through this effort, hundreds of thousands of eyeglasses have been distributed to needy people in over 80 countries.
Faith was at the core of Holland's life. He was a devoted member of Fern Creek Baptist Church, where he served in many roles, including Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member.
Holland was preceded by his beloved wife of 57 years, Adrienne; his son, Ashley Kendall; and his parents. He is survived by his children, Heidi Kendall-Sage (Chuck) and Dr. Dutch Kendall (Teresa); his cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Haley, Lee, Anetta French (Harrison), Destiny, and Rhiannon; and his sisters, Carol Kendall and Nancy Epley.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Fern Creek Baptist Church (5920 Bardstown Road). Visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Fern Creek Funeral Home (5406 Bardstown Road). A burial ceremony at Crosswater Gardens Cemetery (7110 Billtown Rd, Louisville, KY) will be held following the funeral.
