Melvin "Butch" Douglas Mitchell, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at home in the presence of his loving family.

Born on May 2, 1936, in Louisville, Kentucky, he attended Ormsby Village High School. During this time, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with a Bronze Palm and played guard on the varsity basketball team. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961, attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class (SP4). He attended Watterson College in Louisville. He retired from the United States Postal Service after many years of service as a postal clerk. In 2011, he was named an Honorable Kentucky Colonel for being an outstanding member of his community. He was a lifelong and passionate fan of University of Kentucky basketball.

He is survived by His son, Douglas (Kelly) Mitchell, and daughter, Marcy Callahan. He was grandfather to six grandchildren: Jonathan, Robert, Natasha, Joyce, Lexie, Evan, and great-granddaughter, Brynlee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Mitchell; his daughters, Kathy Mitchell-Blad and Cindy Mitchell; his Parents, John T. Mitchell and Lucille H. Mitchell; his Sisters, Lillie Mae Borrows, Oma Jean Vest, and Barbara "Bobby" Truman; his brothers, James W. Mitchell, Robert T. Mitchell, and John K. Mitchell.  He carried in his heart an unconditional love for his family and words cannot describe how much he will be missed.

His funeral service is 11:30am Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY with burial in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, KY. Visitation is 3-8pm Monday, June 9, 2025 at the funeral home.
