Obituary

Martha McCray Gibbs, a devoted mother of two sons, sister, aunt, cousin, and cherished friend to many, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at the age of 82.

Martha was a prominent minister of music -- music was woven into the very fabric of her being. From performing alongside Liberace in her youth to serving as a dedicated Minister of Music for multiple congregations throughout her life, her faith and her talent were inseparable. For many in Louisville, she was a familiar and comforting presence aboard the historic steamboat, The Belle of Louisville—serving as the main calliope player for over 20 years. Whether hearing her play the organ on a Sunday morning or her melodies floating across the river was to know a heart completely dedicated to spreading joy.

Beyond her music, she was compassion embodied and her deepest devotion was always to the family, friends, and pets she loved so dearly. Her upbeat, enthusiastic personality resonated with everyone she met. Friends and family alike recall how she could light up an entire room with her laugh, spreading genuine kindness wherever she went. She lived her faith every day through her simple belief in doing good.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Fern Creek Funeral Home (5406 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY). A memorial service celebrating her life will follow immediately at 2:00 PM. A graveside ceremony will be held on Monday, June 15 at 2pm at the Frankfort Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Louisville Youth Choir, or The "Friends of the Belle" general fund.
