Obituary

Larry David Tyler, Ph.D. passed away on November 5, 2024.

He had a love of music that lasted his entire life.  He played the saxophone and amassed a large collection of many types of musical instruments over his life.  He and his brother produced a number of variety shows in their younger years.  Larry always took the role of producer; Wayne was the front man.   One of the first shows they produced was for Metro Parks, which was how he met his wife of 61 years, Mary Ann Thompson Tyler, whom he met when she danced in one of their shows.  He attended and graduated from Fern Creek High School, where he was in the first class to study calculus and was in the marching band from 7th through 12th grade.  He was also in the inaugural group of Fern Creek's Hall of Fame Alumni.  He attended 2 quarters at Georgia Tech before returning to his permanent home of Speed School at the University of Louisville and earning a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master's degree in Mathematics.  He was later awarded a master's degree of Mechanical Engineering and an interdisciplinary PhD in Physics, Acoustics, and Mechanical Engineering for work in sound pollution.  He was a proud teacher of students for 61 years at Speed School, starting in the 60's when teachers were needed in the first push for STEM learning for the space race.  He put every spare minute he had, sometimes more, into making sure that his students had the best possible Engineering Math preparation.  He and Mary Ann followed the same path in a life of service to teaching.  They both also spent a life in service to the church, as deacons, teachers, and leaders.  He has left a lasting legacy.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Paul Tyler, and his parents, Evelyn Hester Tyler and Paul Ransom Tyler, and by many beloved dogs, most recently Gandpa and Rocky Blue. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Tyler and daughter, Noel Tyler Schulman (Brian).

His funeral is 12pm Monday, November 11, 2024 at Walnut Street Baptist Church, Third and St. Catherine, Louisville, KY.  Visitation is 2-5pm Sunday, November 10, 2024 and after 11:15am Monday until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Walnut Street Baptist Church, 1143 S. Third St., Louisville, KY 40203 or walnutstreet.org and Hosparus.
