Obituary

John Lee Smith, 92, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2022.

John was born in Eldorado, Ill on May 29, 1930 where he attended elementary and high school.  He was raised on a farm along with 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He started dating his future wife when they were in high school and they married 2 years after she graduated.  He volunteered to serve his country by joining the Air Force in 1949.  He stayed in the service 4 years and earned the rank of staff sergeant.  After the service, he attended Southern Illinois University where he earned a degree in accounting.  He then moved to Louisville and started a 32 year career at GE's Appliance Park.

John had deep faith and no matter where he lived, he was always an active church member.  He served as Sunday School teacher, deacon, seminary trustee, and on countless church committees.  Most recently, he was a member of West Broadway Baptist Church.

John is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane; parents, Ben and Ida Smith; and siblings.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Mark Smith (Joyce) and Janie Pitcock (Chris). He also leaves behind grandchildren, Heather Barker (Luke), Ashlee Burba (Todd), Lindsey Harper (Nick), Noah Pitcock (Raven), Jesse Smith (Haylie), Annslee Pitcock; and great grandchildren, Declan, Caleb, Freya, Luca, Nova, and Sloane.

Family and friends will be celebrating his life at 12:00pm Friday, July 15, 2022  at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park.  Visitation is 2:00 - 8:00pm Thursday, July 14, 2022 and after 10:am Friday until the time of the celebration service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be sent to West Broadway Baptist Church, Louisville, KY.
