HARLAN PORTER OCHSENBEIN
Harlan Ochsenbein, age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He grew up in Lansing, Ohio, and graduated from Bridgeport High School. He was a proud member of the United States Army, a Korean War Veteran, and a recipient of the Purple Heart for combat wounds.
Most of his adult life he was a buyer for Kling Co. in Louisville, KY, and later retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the American Legion, Department of Kentucky, Post 201; Disabled American Veterans, Kentucky Chapter 149; and a member of the 24 th Infantry Division Association. In the 1980s, he was the Chairman of the Board of Planning and Zoning Commission for Louisville, KY. He was a member of the KOSAIR Temple Legion of Honor, affiliated with the International Association Legions of Honor Shriners International. He was a 32 nd degree Mason with over 50 years in the Grand Lodge of Kentucky and a Life Member of BOAZ Lodge 850. He was the catalyst in starting Boy Scout Troop 77 at the Beulah Presbyterian Church in Fern Creek. He later became the Chairman of the Cherokee District of the Old Kentucky Home Council, Boy Scouts of America. He loved vegetable gardening and sharing them with his family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, and riding his scooter on the trails at "The Parklands" along Floyd's Fork.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Johnie Sue Joyce Ochsenbein; his parents, Oscar and Hazel Ochsenbein; siblings, Bob Ochsenbein, David Ochsenbein, and Margie Scott.
He is survived by his children, Douglas Ochsenbein, Mark Ochsenbein (Sherrie), Susan Atwell (Tommy), and Rebecca Ghiefardi (Paul); nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and one due in August of 2023.
The visitation is 3-7pm, Thursday, February 2, at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later time and location.
