Gordon Earl
Miller
November 7, 2023
Gordon Earl Miller, 94, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023 after a short illness.
Earl was born September 22, 1929 at the family homestead in Fern Creek, Kentucky surrounded by brothers and sisters and where he lived his entire life, and his ancestors can be traced back to some of the first Kentucky settlers.
He was in the army and stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict and then trained to become an electrician and worked all over the Louisville area for Tinsley Roman and Johnson Electric Companies He was a master craftsman and examples of his folk art are all over his surroundings at the family homestead where he also raised cattle and vegetables.
He met the love of his life, Melba Durbin, at the local grocery mart where he bought a candy bar every day just so he could see and talk to her. They married in 1969 and though they never had children of their own, a little neighbor up the hill, waited almost every day for Earl to get home from work. They "adopted" each other and are friends to this day.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Leslie and Edith May (Wheeler) Miller, his wife, Melba; and his brothers, Winfred/Winnie (Ethel), Vernon/Lube (Marcella) and Forrest/Barney (Catherine)Miller and his sisters Alberta/Sis Wood (Carter) and Dorothy Berger (Carl).
He is survived by his sister, Norma Jean Breitenstein (Ray) and countless nieces and nephews, some of which were able to help him live independently. Not only was he Uncle Earl to so many, but also Great Uncle and Great Great Uncle and lived to see many generations of his family.
Earl amazingly was still cutting his own grass and chopping wood up until a couple weeks ago and will be fondly remembered by many for his hard work, dry sense of humor and fearlessness to tackle any project even at 94!
Earl chose to have a private burial next to his wife in Resthaven Memorial Park.
