Obituary

George H. Silliman, Jr., age 94, native of Fern Creek, was born July 19, 1929 to Edna Ziegler Silliman and George H. Silliman, Sr. and passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.  George graduated from St. Francis of Assisi Grade School in 1943 and St. Xavier High School in 1947. He was captain of the basketball team and helped pitch the Tigers to the 1945 State Baseball Championship. He was inducted into the St. X Hall of Fame in 1992.  He also attended U of L on a basketball scholarship but left the next spring to play baseball in the Chicago White Sox Minor League system.  After three years he developed shoulder problems and decided to become a member of Bricklayers Local #4, where he worked for 39 years, retiring in 1991.

He was preceded in death by his loving, beautiful wife, Bernadine (Bernie) whom he dearly loved.  They were married for 72 years.  He also was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Sharon Marie Pfau (Dr. David); son, Robert Joseph "Bob" Silliman; granddaughter, Jennifer Solomon; brother, Harlan Z. Silliman; and one step great grandson Micah Hyde.

He is survived by daughter, Barbara L. Smith (Tim); daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Silliman; grandchildren, Jeremy "Andy" Perry (Nancy); Samuel Welch (Trista); Aaron Silliman; and Emily Garrison (Dr. Jason); step grandchildren, Jessica Coghill (Tim) and Lesley Newton (Troy); grandson-in-law, Dan Solomon; great grandchildren, Daniel and Ben Solomon; Jacob and Joshua Welch; Lockley and Leighton Silliman; and Ethan Garrison; step great grandchildren, Amber Hyde, Taylor Evans, Ethan and Allee Coghill and Addie and Owen Newton.

His funeral mass is 10am Monday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation is 1-4pm Sunday at Fern Creek Funeral Home.
