Eldest son of William Ralph and Doris Hayes Keeling, Doug was born January 13, 1947 in Lebanon, KY. He grew up in the Fern Creek area, attended Fern Creek High School, graduating in 1965. He attended the University of Kentucky, receiving his degree in Commerce (Accounting) in May, 1969. In January, 1968 he met his dream lady, Marilyn Mills. They were married in August, 1968, prior to his senior year at UK. Upon graduation, they moved to Louisville, where he accepted a position at Calvert Distillery (Joseph E. Seagram & Sons). After 2 1/2 years and other promotions, he was transferred to Baltimore, MD. While working as Plant Controller at the Calvert plant he returned to school and received his Masters of Business Administration from Loyola University. With that degree, he taught part time in the accounting program at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD. He cherished his years at Seagram, but in 1990 he had an opportunity to retire early. With his family he returned to Louisville to start a new phase of his life, becoming owner of Gunning, Culp, & Keeling (Income Tax and Small Business Consultants), retiring fully in 2010.
He was preceded in death by his closest friend and wife of 42 years, Marilyn Mills Keeling, his parents, and sister Rita K. Bean. He is survived by his children Chris, Mathew (Dawn), and Cindy, grandchildren Lexi and Max, and brothers Ken and Roger.
He was active in sports throughout his life, listening to Cincinnati Reds baseball and UK basketball on the radio from the age of 8 until his death. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed.
His funeral is 12pm Monday, June 5, 2023 at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40291 with burial in Highland Memory Gardens, Mt. Washington, KY. Visitation is 1-5pm Sunday, June 4, 2023.
