Obituary

David Ganote, 79, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024. He was born Robert David Ganote on October 5, 1944 to Auda Mae Jacobs Ganote and Leonard Thomas Ganote, Sr., the fourth child of six.

After graduating from Southern High School in the Class of 1962 – a group that he gathered with until the very end of his life! -- David went to work with Alexander Brothers, the first sheet metal company to have a seamless gutter machine in the Louisville area. Soon after, he became half owner of Alexander & Associate, before creating his own small business as owner/operator of the R.D. Ganote Sheet Metal Company while still in his twenties. Over time, as he built deeply trusting relationships with all of his clients, some of them started requesting that David create special copper metal work (architectural sheet metal – copper standing seam roofs, flat lock roofs, and flashings) for their custom homes. He ended his career doing that form of artisan copper work, which was featured in the Home Builders' special edition of the Courier-Journal and in custom home builders' trade magazines. Out of all of his life's work, David was most proud of his artisan copper work, which can still be seen aging gracefully with a beautiful patina around Louisville and the surrounding area.

Even more important to David than his work was his beloved family and his faith. He spent 58 years of marriage with Sharon Ann Best Ganote, the love of his life. David was an extremely dedicated, loving, and supportive father to his children, Cynthia and Jim, and he served as an exceptional example of a good, great, kind man to them and to his large extended family, his many friends, and to his church family.

David's favorite pastime of all was sitting on the front porch of the old homeplace, his beloved boyhood home, telling stories with his family members and friends. So many of David's favorite memories took place on that porch, as he looked out on the land that has been in the Ganote family for 85 years.

David is lovingly remembered by his wife Sharon Ganote; children Dr. Cynthia Ganote and James (Jim) Ganote (spouse Johanna); siblings Eva Joyce Craig, Karen Kraus (spouse Craig) and Richard (Rick) Ganote; and many other beloved family members, close friends, and church family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his baby son Robert David Ganote, Jr.; and his twin siblings Constance (Connie) Lindsey and Leonard Thomas Ganote, Jr.
