Betty Ann
Carruthers
July 5, 2022
On July 5, 2022, heaven got a whole lot brighter after Betty Ann (Settle) Carruthers passed away peacefully at her home. She was surrounded by her loving family who she cherished above all things.
Betty was born on November 8, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky where she resided the majority of her life until moving to Taylorsville, KY in 2001. She did spend some time, as a child, living on her grandparent's farm in Owensboro, KY and she loved to share stories about making friends with the farm animals. It was here she learned to value simplicity.
Betty graduated from DuPont Manual High School in 1961 and eventually decided to continue her education at the University of Bellarmine where she would study logic. After her first few logic classes she decided she was already too logical to continue. During this time, she worked at the courthouse in downtown Louisville where she met her husband of 58 years, Barry Carruthers. He was her rock. Together they built a family (and a couple of homes) they took pride in. As a true matriarch, Betty considered it an honor to be a stay-at-home mother and she took the lead on raising four children while her husband worked tirelessly to provide for them. She taught her kids right from wrong and that wrong is never right. And if they did something wrong, they better fix it and make it right. She taught them how to stand up for themselves and not back down. And by example she showed the beauty in putting others before yourself. She would literally give someone the shirt off her back, skip a meal so someone else could have one, and give away the last dollar in her wallet to someone in need (if she could find her wallet which was often in a strategic hiding place). In the eyes of her family, she was a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, a cook, a maid and a best friend. As her kids grew into adults and married, she welcomingly accepted two sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law. With over 31 years of experience as a mother-in-law, she treated them as her own. But it wasn't until she was promoted to Nana that her level of awesomeness became unmatched. It was like the world's greatest mother pulled out a cape nobody knew she had and became a superhero! No matter the hour, no matter the circumstance, she was there. She loved her grandchildren fiercely and they felt the same for her. They added comedian to her list of talents. She loved to laugh and to make them laugh. To her laughter was a love language.
While she took pride in being a great mother and grandmother, she was also a loyal wife, a wonderful daughter, an extraordinary sister, a caring aunt, and an incredible friend. She had a special bond with her little sister who she adored spending time with and will no doubt be watching over her from heaven.
Betty was truly beautiful, but her amazing hair, gorgeous eyes, and stylish fashion only radiated her inner beauty.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Barry, children: Barry (Sharon), Kelly (Jeff), Brian (Kim), Kristi (Mark); grandchildren: Cody (Taylor), Kaci, Parker, Kaylee, Alec, Spencer, Jack, Reagan, Kenzie, Reese; sister: Linda; brother: Paul (Debby); aunt: Dot; nieces, nephews, other family members, friends, and her favorite sidekick pups Tebow and Harper.
"Say not in grief that she has gone, but give thanks that she was yours"
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 11 from 3:00-7:00pm followed by a prayer service in the chapel at 7:00pm. Fern Creek Funeral Home - 5406 Bardstown Road
